Ask anyone who watches TV, reads, or listens to podcaststhere’s no hotter genre at the moment than true crime. Cases make for excellent drama, and The Act is no exception, and the anthology series is coming exclusively to .
The Act is an adaptation of the real-life story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard and the murder of her mother Dee Dee Blanchard, who was accused of abusing her daughter and fabricating her many disabilities and illnesses.
The eight hourlong episodes start with a depiction of Gypsy, a teen girl who seems to have a long list of medical issues. She’s confined to a wheelchair and relies on a feeding tube. Her mother claims she is paraplegic, epileptic, and ” has the mind of a 7-year-old,” among many other things. But as most true crime cases go, not all is what it seems.
Without spoiling all the grisly details, the story of the Blanchard family is one of the strangest and most compelling murder cases in American history. It’s been spun off into an HBO documentary (Mommy Dead and Dearest), a Lifetime dramatization (Love You to Death), and the subject of many investigative TV specials over the past few years.
